PE Stamp vs. Full Design — What You Are Actually Buying
The stamp is the most misunderstood product in engineering. Here is the honest version, from a publisher whose family sells both sides of it.
What a Stamp Legally Is
When a professional engineer seals a drawing, they are stating — to the state, under their license — that the work was prepared by them or under their responsible charge, or that they have reviewed it thoroughly enough to take professional responsibility for it. The seal is a legal assumption of liability, not a rubber stamp, and every state board enforces it that way.
When Review-and-Seal Is Legitimate
- Complete drawings exist, prepared by a competent designer or architect
- The sealing PE independently checks calculations and code compliance — and changes what fails
- The PE is licensed in the project's state and discipline
- The review is documented; the engineer can defend every sheet they sealed
That product — sold on this site by Seal Anvil and Stamp Forge — saves real money and time when the underlying design is sound.
The Lines No Honest Engineer Crosses
- Sealing drawings never reviewed ("plan stamping") — illegal in every state, full stop
- Sealing outside the licensed discipline or state
- Sealing work the engineer knows fails code because the client is in a hurry
- A price quoted for "a stamp" sight-unseen — the review IS the product; nobody can price it before seeing the work
If a seller offers any of those, walk — and if you want the vocabulary for why, the board lookup pages link the regulators who write the rules.
When You Need Full Design Instead
No drawings, failing drawings, or a design problem nobody has solved yet: that is design scope. It costs more because it is more — the engineer originates the work and seals their own. The scope guide sorts the cases.
Who Publishes This Directory
Published by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. The firms evaluated and listed on this site today are the publisher's own family of brands — this is an affiliated directory, not a neutral referee. The methodology below is the standard any engineering firm can be measured against, and it is the standard we hold our own firms to in public. Presentation order on this site is the publisher's choice and an experiment in what helps buyers decide — it is not an objective quality verdict, and no firm pays for placement. Coverage claims are limited to licensure the operator's bench actually holds, stated per state. No reviews, ratings, or project claims are published for any firm unless they can be documented — you will find none invented here.
Operated by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. Founder & CEO: Jeremy “Chico” Mills — serial entrepreneur and USAF veteran. Jeremy is the founder and chief executive; he is not a licensed professional engineer, and no page on this site implies otherwise. The engineering behind the listed firms is performed and sealed by their licensed PE benches.
