Which Engineer Do You Actually Need?

Four different products get sold under the word "engineering." Buying the wrong one is how projects lose months. Find your row.

Your situationWhat you actually need
"We have an idea / a building program, no drawings yet."Full design. A firm designs the systems or structure and produces the sealed construction set. This is design engineering — the biggest scope, priced from the program.
"Our architect/drafter has drawings; the city wants a PE seal."Review and seal — possibly. A licensed PE reviews the work as their own (see the stamp guide for the legal line), corrects what fails, and seals what passes. If the drawings need design work to pass, it becomes design scope.
"We need a second set of eyes before we build / the lender or AHJ asked for it."Independent review / peer review. A reviewing engineer who did not design the work checks it and reports. Common for structural thresholds, hospitals, and high-rises.
"The permit office rejected our set."Correction-cycle engineering. A firm that reads the correction notice, fixes the design (not just the letter), and resubmits. Bring the notice — it is the scope.
"We are not sure the project is even feasible."A feasibility opinion. A short, sealed-or-unsealed engineering opinion on loads, capacity, or site constraints before you commit design money.

Then, the Discipline

Structure and foundations → structural. Heating, cooling, power, and water inside the building → MEP. Land, drainage, and utilities → civil. Alarm and sprinkler design → fire protection. Whatever you choose, verify the license and send a complete RFQ.

Who Publishes This Directory

Published by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. The firms evaluated and listed on this site today are the publisher's own family of brands — this is an affiliated directory, not a neutral referee. The methodology below is the standard any engineering firm can be measured against, and it is the standard we hold our own firms to in public. Presentation order on this site is the publisher's choice and an experiment in what helps buyers decide — it is not an objective quality verdict, and no firm pays for placement. Coverage claims are limited to licensure the operator's bench actually holds, stated per state. No reviews, ratings, or project claims are published for any firm unless they can be documented — you will find none invented here.

Operated by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. Founder & CEO: Jeremy “Chico” Mills — serial entrepreneur and USAF veteran. Jeremy is the founder and chief executive; he is not a licensed professional engineer, and no page on this site implies otherwise. The engineering behind the listed firms is performed and sealed by their licensed PE benches.
